Resurgence Slow Sundays
BAKE BREAD – FOR YOURSELF, YOUR FRIENDS, YOUR NEIGHBOURS
The first Resurgence Slow Sunday celebrated baking bread and this theme was continued for our second Resurgence Slow Sunday. Here is the background to this Resurgence Slow Sunday action of baking bread as a rejection of mass-produced, factory-made bread.

WHY BAKE BREAD?
Mahatma Gandhi made spinning an act of defiance; the spinning wheel became the symbol of the independence movement in India. Similarly, good bread should become a symbol of environmentalism. Bread diversity is a symbol of cultural diversity. Regional varieties represent grain diversity as well as diversity of style. More...

Attendance at the Organic Vegetable Gardening @ Moana event looked like about 100 people. It was a combination of information and product promotion of the Dr. Earth line of organic gardening products.

At the end of the presentation, a raffle was held and I won a 45# bag of worm castings!

Hi kids,

Just want you all to know that I have a goodly supply of 'Laura' non-GMO soybeans on hand. I'd like to give you all a pound or so of them so that you might plant them in your garden (or indoor planter) this year for the purpose of multiplying seeds.
Perhaps our new 'master gardener' (Billy) can give us tips on how best to grow these things?
Soybeans often get a bad rap from some because of their lack of one of the amino-acids (forgot which one). And, especially when sprouted, they can rob the body of this chemical. But, as stated in the great book, "Diet for a Small Planet", soy can be combined with other grains to make complete proteins.
Soy is nearly equivalent to meat in protein, has ZERO cholesterol, and is chock full of other good stuff. It has kept millions of Chinese from starving over the milleniums. Hasn't seemed to have harmed them too much.Yes, yes, I know, too much estrogen (?), but when you're hungry, perhaps that is not of too much concern.
Additionally, beans are nitrogen-fixing and good for improving your soil as well a green manure for adding organic materials. (My soil is so poor, it needs all the material it can get)
The EROEI of soy in my experience is about 10 to 1. Certainly better than tar sands or corn ethanol. Grown in good healthy soil it's probably much better.
So let me know if you want me to package some seeds for you.
I also have smaller quantities of organic sprouting barley, and a bit of organic wheatberries.
I highly recommend that we grow these this year for the purpose of gathering seeds rather than eating the stuff now. Now we still have commercial grocery stores available with food, but the chain is so long and fragile, who knows.
If you have a good gardern area, let me also suggest that you consider growing some potatoes and other things like turnips. These grow easily and have been staples for many for a long time.

I'm hoping it doesn't all collapse before spring of 2010.

Thanks
Craig
